We know you want to know more about John Marshall and the Cheap Rodeo so be sure to check out our interview with them below.
FBC: What made you want to get involved in the country music world?
JM: I grew up listening to a lot of country music. My older brother was a huge countrymusic fan. And everyday morning and afternoon, to and from school, he would blast his favorite country artist, who have become huge influences on my singing and writing country music. ( Garth Brooks, George Straight, Brooks and Dunn, Toby Keith, Reba McEntire to name a few), I got involved in Country Music when I wrote my first country song about 10 years ago with a gentleman named Brian Potter, who is a well known songwriter and producer of mostly the 70s. He was writing and producing for many artists at the time, but one credit of his that stood out for me was writing and producing Glen Campbell’s “Rhine Stone Cowboy” From there I continued to write country songs with other writers and formed my band, Cheap Rodeo.
FBC: What song of yours is your favorite and why?
JM: This is the hardest question of course, because I love all of the songs we play and write. If I had to choose one, I would say, “We Do It Like That.” But because I am a pianist, I gravitate more towards any of our songs that I get to play piano on, because I feel so much more comfortable and at home behind the piano, so “First Night in Heaven” is another favorite of mine.
FBC: Who is your country music idol and why?
JM: Garth Brooks by far. I was seven when No Fences came out, and my Uncle justbought the cassette. We took a little camping trip for a few days, and the entire time that album was playing out of the car. “The Thunder Rolls” did something to me, without even know what the song was about, “Unanswered prayers had the same effect, and Friends In Low places is embedded in me forever! Really all of his songs have some magic power. I remembering hearing the piano intro to “The Dance” for the fist time and that's all it took, to be one of my all time favorite country songs.
FBC: How did you all meet and decide to form Cheap Rodeo?
JM: The Band Cheap Rodeo was formed by Robert Best and me after we decided totry and take our songs on the road ourselves when we got the idea that we might have a sound that could appeal to people. A couple years later I got a call from a musician friend, that I went to college with for one year in Colorado, Ryan Glisan. He was asking what I’ve been up to, and said he was thinking about moving to California to pursue music. I asked if he would be interested in playing guitar with us. He flew out a couple months later, and after hearing some of our songs, he was interested in both playing and writing country music with us. Since then he had a big part in writing our latest EP, and helped shoot many cover music videos, and got our social networking ball rolling. The band Cheap Rodeo is primarily the three of us, but we have been very fortunate to find two great guys to help bring our music to the stage, bassist Steve Shuster, and drummer Mike McCurdy. We have been super fortunate to get great guest players on our recordings such as Marty Rifkin (played for Bruce Springsteen, Dwight Yoakam, Glen Campbell & LeAnn Rimes) on pedal steel, Glen Sobel on Drums and the world famous Pat Flynn (played & wrote with New Grass Revival, Garth Brooks, Lee Ann Womack and Michael Martin Murphey) from Nashville to produce and play guitar, mandolin, and banjo on our latest EP.
FBC: If you could do a country duet with anyone who would it be and why?
JM: Taylor Swift. She would be fun, energetic, and a good blend with my voice. Whoam I kidding, any association with her, and you are set!
FBC: What are three fun facts about you that you want your fans to know?
JM: 1) My mother in law is actress PJ Soles well known for her major rolls in the original “HALLOWEEN”, “CARRIE”, “STRIPES” and “ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL” with the Ramones just to name a few.
2) I have a passion for writing music for film and television as well when I am not writing songs or performing. PJ helped me get some of my first feature films that I have scored by introducing me to some of her friends in the film industry. I scored my first feature film while still in college.
3) My wife is a way better songwriter than I am, so we get to spend some time writing and singing together as well. She is a yoga instructor and has taught me to stand on my head to see the world from a different perspective.
